This is the Life

Posted in Toby, ukulele on 9 April 08 by mikevc

Tonight as I was playing my ukulele, Toby (age four) came in the room and asked if he could play music with me. I told him of course he could. I asked him to bring one of his instruments. He left and came back with his soccer-ball-shaped guitar and joined me as I was playing “Nothing but Flowers” by the Talking Heads. I showed him how to sing the “You’ve got it, you’ve got it” parts. He laid down behind me and sang along with my uke playing and out-of-tune singing while he strummed open chords on his out-of-tune guitar. After we finished the song, he said: “Wow, this is the life: laying down and playing music with your favorite person.” Indeed.

Christmas in B’ham

Posted in boys, Jonah, Toby, travel on 28 December 07 by mikevc

We spent the Christmas holidays in Birmingham, AL.  We were visiting Letitia’s grandmother.  Although the prospect of spending Christmas in a hotel and a retirement community might not sound enticing, we had a great time.  When was the last time you went swimming on Christmas and Christmas Eve (indoor pool)? or, had an entire hotel to yourself?

That was pretty much the case for us.  At the hotel with us were Letitia’s cousins (2 parents and 3 kids) from Delaware and her parents.  The three rooms we had made up 1/3 of total occupancy on Christmas Eve.  We held little parties in the lobby and took over the joint.  It was a blast.

J and T got presents from mom and dad and stockings from Santa’s elf Quincy on Christmas Morning in the hotel.  In the afternoon we went over to Great Grams’ where Santa had been informed to leave their presents.  They loved this arrangement: instead of only opening presents first thing in the morning, they had two “present times” to look forward to.

The next day, Jonah (the birthday boy), Tobe, Cousin Bryn, and I went to the Birmingham Zoo’s Zoolight Safari event, which featured thousands of lights throughout the zoo.  We had a lot of fun.

The boys highlights were petting the rat, riding the train, and the S’Mores.  My highlight:  When we first arrived Jonah, who is recovering from a cough, started dancing like a madman to the loud Christmas music.  After a while, he began coughing again.  As we passed through the area where the music was loud later in the evening, he says to me:  “We need to go fast; this is really hard for me because my brain tells me that I really want to dance but I know I shouldn’t because of my condition.”  Fun for all!

T-Bone Gets Grillz

Posted in boys, Toby on 26 November 07 by mikevc

tobygrillz.jpgtobygrillz2.jpgToby got some pseudo-bling for his teeth for his birthday from one of L.’s friends. He hadn’t worn them before and I had never seen them.  Tonight he was sitting in front of me watching TV and he  he turned around with them in and started mugging.  I couldn’t stop laughing.  He looked quite impressive. I am not sure that these pics really capture his look. Larger versions are available at my flickr account.

What do you think? Is he the next Paul Wall?

More Pictures!

Posted in boys, family, Jonah, Toby on 13 November 07 by mikevc

sf.jpgFor those who care about such things, I posted several shots of the family on a trip to Northern California for Auntie Ing’s wedding from Summer 2005. Toby found an SD card that had a couple hundred pictures on it that apparently never made it to flickr.

I remember the trip well for photographic reasons. We were there for roughly two weeks but the pictures are only the last four or five days. At a Fourth of July festival, I was playing with settings on my then relatively new camera as we waited for the fireworks to begin and I accidentally deleted all of the pictures documenting the first half of our trip–including the wedding (and some fun hiking, birding, and kayaking).  I tried to make up for it by snapping a picture every chance I had in the remaining days in San Francisco, Santa Rosa, and the trip to the Jelly Belly factory.

Visit my flickr account to takea gander at what the boys looked like two years ago.

Toby the Builder

Posted in Toby on 19 October 07 by mikevc

tobe.jpgToby loves to put on his toy safety goggles and grab an old toolbox that once belonged to my Grandpa Vic that now holds all his toy tools. When he does this, he tells us he is going to work. Tonight, he wandered into the bedroom where I was reading looking as you see him here; I felt that uncontrollable parental urge to take a picture. I asked him where his work was since he never tells us more than he is “ready for work” or “going to work”. He told me he works for a “building place”. Apparently, the “building place” he works for is quite progressive considering their clothing optional policy.

Toby’s Important Research

Posted in books, boys, Toby on 4 August 07 by mikevc

I was sitting in the living room reading Ambient Findability when Toby wandered into the room. I had some of those 3M Post-it Flags that I was using to mark interesting or relevant passages. When he asked me what they were, I showed him that I used them to remind me of something important that I wanted to remember. He asked if he could have a few so I gave him some.

The next thing I know he comes to me with his copy of Muncha! Muncha! Muncha! with numerous flags in it. He told me he needed to remember the important parts too. He even matched the colors of the flags to the colors of the illustrations on the pages.

The Approaching End of School

Posted in boys, Jonah, Toby on 21 May 07 by mikevc

Jonah’s first day of Kindergarten: September 14, 2006Toby’s first day in pre-school: September 7, 2006One more day of class for Toby and four more for Jonah. I am curious to see how pre-school has changed T-bone and if Kindergarten has had any observable impact on J. I am loading first day picks on my Flickr page and here. I will update with final day pictures later this week. What fun! Can you tell which one is which? A hint, you say? Jonah is five (in the picture) and Toby is two (again, in the picture). Look for comparitive pictures showing the physical ravages of the school year later this week.

The Oracle that is The Nighlight

Posted in boys, Toby on 9 May 07 by mikevc

Toby has taken to talking to his Mater (from Cars) nightlight.  It turns out that the nightlight not only knows everything but will only communicate withToby.  This evening the nightlight made very clear to Toby that shoes were not required when going to church.  When Letitia tried to tell him he had to wear shoes, he came back with the inarguable point that the nightlight said he didn’t and the nightlight knows everything.   The nightlight also told him that my favorite drink is soda in gold cans (Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi) and my favorite color was green but has changed to blue.  I told him that I still liked green, he told me I was wrong.  You can’t argue with the nightlight; bring on the blue!

As an Antidote to the Previous Post

Posted in baseball, boys, Toby on 27 February 07 by mikevc

For those who feel my previous post was ridiculous, I offer this story.  Last summer, I decided that I would only be reading books on baseball.  Whenever Toby (2 at the time) saw me reading a book he noticed that there was a baseabll player on the cover.  A few months after this, I had left the book I was reading at the time (not a baseball book) on the sofa as I got up to get some soda.  I came back and found Toby holding the book as if reading it.  As he looked at the pages, he pretended to read aloud, “…and the guy hit the ball.  Blah, blah, blah.  Bor-ing!” And with that, he dropped the book on the sofa, hopped down, and walked off laughing his little head off.  So much for sharing my love of the game with young T-bone.
